The Cabinet of Veganosity
We recently designed and installed the first ever vegan cabinet of curiosity, titled ‘The Cabinet of Veganosity’ in a school in London. We worked with artist Miss Hart, known as The Vegan Taxidermist, to design every item out of felt made from recycled plastic bottles. The 4 meter long installation includes items traditionally found in a Victorian cabinet such as a puffer fish, fossils and skeletons, but also includes some more tongue in cheek items such as a unicorn skull, the hat from ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and Van Gough’s ear.
Our aim was to draw children and adults in with their natural curiosity and after a moment, they realise the humour behind it. They can see that it’s not a traditional cabinet of curiosity but an art installation itself. By making everything out of felt, we have softened what can sometimes be an intimidating collection of oddities and made it a more considered visual, curated in a new way.
